Reviewing the semester and my English learning

After the course of this semester, I used the computer as a tool to learn English more. The websites and tools introduced in the class are quite useful. Some of them are even very interesting. Some of them are user-friendly. Also, I learned that the government spend a lot to design websites for elementary and high school students to do self-learning, which is quite good, but they're still need to improve them. As a English major student, it is honorable that I could use my profession to give advise and complement to the websites.

Besides English learning or teaching, some of the websites also help me do my language learning. For example, I am now learning German as my third foreign language, I use the website sound-of-speech frequently to learn the phonic of German.

I would like to say, within the four months, we spent two hour every week here getting the information of all of these. I learned a lot.

mobile learning

Vocabulary Spelling City:

I visited the website and I tried to play the games. I think the games are quite helpful for a teacher to teach children or people who just started to learn English. But for me, as a student who want to improve my English ability, it is too limited for me to learn something new. Because when I tried to play the games, I have to make a vocabulary list first, but what I typed on the list were some vocabulary which I already known. However, I still like this website for it is a good tool for me as a teacher or parent in the future.

My mobile learning experience: WORD STREAK on Facebook message's games

Recently, Facebook started to have some games in their message system. It means that people can play a game with your Facebook friends via the Massenger (where you sent messages to your friends) There are many kinds of games you can choose to play. I would like to introduce the WORD STREAK. The way to play the game is quite simple. Within one minute, the more words you can spell, the more point you get.

WirteAway

After trying to use WriteAway to write an article, I found it didn't work on me. Maybe it was because I didn't getting used to use it, but I still not like it so much. When I was writing this article, I found it would correct my spelling errors or grammatical errors by underlying the word, but "Word" and even this blog can do that for me. I don't need to use WriteAway. When I tried to figure out if I used the wrong phrase, for example, "take care." It checked on these two words not as a collocation but two separate words.

Summary and Comment of A News Ariticle (undone)

Website:
http://edition.cnn.com/2017/04/27/health/stealthing-sexual-assault-condoms/index.html?iid=ob_lockedrail_bottomlist

Title:
Some call it 'stealthing,' others call it sexual assault

Summary:
Some people call it "stealthing" -- a practice where men secretly remove or damage condoms without their partners' knowledge. Others call it sexual assault. The writer of this article prefers to call it "nonconsensual condom removal."  "I don't like the word 'stealthing.' It sounds like something tricky and distasteful, but kind of like a fad," said the writer Brodsky.
And there is no law to protect these victims of "stealthing."

Cool English

When I go into the website Cool English, I was first attracted by the Games. I think it's definitely a good way for children to learn English by playing games. I tried some of these games, and I found that I was quiet enjoy them. I could learn words playing these games and not even under much pressure. I would like to introduce a game that I think which is special, It is a puzzle game of map. At level one, it was a map of the world, and then it started to make the region smaller, in the mean while, it would tell you where the place is in English. Children or people who want to learn English could not only learn English but also get the knowledge of geography.

Like these:

And then I checked the vocabulary section. I was so surprised that there was a "collocation" part, because when I was an elementary school student, I never had a concept about collocation until I became a college student. I think it is good that now children have the chance to learn English with a better way, but not just memorize all the words and get 100 scores on quiz.

COCA Exercise

When the professor asked us to search three words with COCA, I didn't know want words I wanted to search for. So a stupid idea just came up my mind--"Why not start with my English name?" and then I typed "Cathy."

Example 1:

Cathy (n.)

Frequency: 3150
Meaning: A female first name.
Example:

My example: Hi, my name is Cathy, you can just call me Cat.

So I checked many of the examples on COCA, and I realize that "Cathy" almost has no other meanings but a name. Unlike my friends' names, there are Bonnie, a little rabbit; Lily, a kind of flower, and so on.

Example 2:

Stranger (n.)

Frequency: 10248
Meaning: someone who you don't know.
Example:

My example: I don't like to talk to stranger, please don't force me to.

Example 3:

Elegant (adj.)

Frequency: 8916
Meaning: describe someone or something is very graceful and beautiful.
Example:

My example: Lady Mary was so elegant that all the gentlemen at the ball couldn't help but keep looking at her.

Vocabulary Exercises for the Academic Word List Exercises

My CALL Experiences

When I was a senior high school student, I used to use "VoiceTube" to improve my English listening comprehension. I also used TedTalk to listen to others cool ideas sometimes.
After I going to the college, I fell in love with American and English series. I watch them in my free time. I learn some slang by watching them. At the same time, I practice my English listening comprehension by not looking the subtitles, and it works. I found that by this way, I can learn not only English but also different cultures in the English-speaking countries in the world.

Self-introduction

My name is Cathy.
I'll be 21 years old this June.
I was born in Kaohsiung, and lived in there until I was 12. Then I moved to Tainan.
I have two sisters, one is older than me, while the other is younger than me.
In my first and second year in Soochow University, I join the club "Musical Performance Club."
We sing, dance and act with the members. Last year, I got the chance to play on the stage.
I really enjoyed the stage. I love the club members very much. They are like my family.
I believe that I can do everything I want to do if I have their support.
